A Monstrous Regiment of Women

Delighted to be working with VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland this year to document a range of Year of Stories events.

All across the country, in every local authority, communities are telling tales as part of Scotland’s Year of Stories. A fascinating programme of storytelling events and activity is being delivered by a diverse mix of community groups, museums, and culture and heritage organisations, supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund.

Garidge Theatre has commissioned a brand new play – A Monstrous Regiment of Women – performed at Inverurie’s Garioch Heritage Centre as part of Scotland’s Year of Stories programme. Written by award-winning writer Alan Bissett, the play explored the life of inspirational Scottish feminist, suffragette and journalist, Caroline Phillips (1874 – 13 January 1956). Born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire, Caroline was a true pioneer: honorary secretary of the Aberdeen branch of the Women’s Social and Political Union, and a journalist at a time when there were only 66 female journalists in the UK. Performed in English and Doric dialect by a cast of twenty young people who live in and around Inverurie, this will be a fabulous celebration of local history and language. The play was directed by experienced theatre-maker Rhona Mitchell.
